Fuji & The Enviornment...

From our President and CEO on down, Fuji is committed to the environment - and sees environmental problems as one of the key challenges of our time... and our business.

In fact, Fuji has founded two group companies that specialize in environmental measurement/analysis, environmental consultation and recycling.

We also develop environmentally conscious products by conducting product environmental assessment, avoiding the use of hazardous chemical substances, practicing energy and resource saving, and assuring recyclability.

In our procurement of components and materials, we ascertain whether or not our suppliers are eco-conscious throughout the supply chain. Our suppliers must also construct and operate an environmental management system based on a standard such as ISO 14001, and assure us that raw materials and parts must not contain the hazardous chemical substances designated by us.

Some substances are banned altogether. For example, mercury, cadmium and lead are totally abolished in all Fuji alkaline manufacturing processes.

Throughout the manufacturing process itself, we promote zero-emissions and mostly eliminate landfill waste and simple incineration. We also promote effective use of resources by recovering, reusing and recycling end of use products. In fact, we have now achieved a recycling rate of 93.3%.

At all Fuji plants in Japan, we achieved zero waste emissions in 2007, and have totally eliminated waste emissions since the end of 2004.

In the area of energy savings, we have reduced energy-consumption-related CO2 emissions by 6% and greenhouse gas emissions by 63%. This far surpasses the goal of the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, VOC emissions were reduced by 29.5% from 2000 levels.

In fact, one of our key guidelines is to disclose all environmental-related information pertaining to our business activities, products and services, keep ourselves in check by evaluating disclosure feedback, and utilizing that feedback to improve our environmental activities.

For well over a decade, Fuji's environmental commitment and achievements are a matter of international record. Here is an abridged summary.

1992: Establishment of our Environmental Protection Preservation Division.
Total elimination of mercury from our manganese dry batteries.
1993: Total elimination of mercury from our laminated batteries.
Total elimination of specified chlorofluorocarbons.
1995: Establishment of company-wide environmental protection regulations.
Total elimination of use of trichloroethane.
1996: Establishment of Environmental Protection Standards.
1997: Creation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
1998: Acquisition of ISO 144001 certification at five domestic plants (Japan).
1999: Three overseas plants acquire ISO 14001 certification.
2000: Establishment of Second Environmental Action Plan.
2002: Acquisition of ISO 14001 certification for an additional domestic and two overseas plants.
2003: Establishment of the Third Environmental Action Plan.
2004: Establishment of the Contained Chemical Substances Management Committee.
ALL Fuji/FDK group production sites complete acquisition of ISO 14001 certification.
2006: Establishment of the Fourth Environmental Action Plan.
2007: Publication of Fuji/FDK Social and Environmental Report 2007.
